Meet #TeamXynomix: Dan Thomson – Technical Consultant

We've built an exceptional team over the years - but don't just take our word for it. In our Meet #TeamXynomix series you'll get to know some of the people you may speak to on a daily basis as well as those who keep the wheels turning behind the scenes.

Today we’re getting to know Dan, who tells us a little about his role in the SQL Server team and reveals why we probably shouldn’t put him on a pub quiz team any time soon.

What's your job title at Xynomix?

Technical Consultant

How long have you worked at Xynomix?

Three days … haha! Though I previously worked for the company for around 16 months between September 2017 and December 2018. I shouldn’t have left in hindsight so it’s great to be back and I’m looking forward to hitting the ground running.

What does your role involve?

My primary focus is the support of our SQL Server customers. It’s an ever growing estate here at Xynomix so one day can be (and normally is) completely different from the previous day. It’s great for tuning your skills and keeping on top of the latest developments.

What do you enjoy most about working at Xynomix?

It’s a cliché I know but the people really do make it an enjoyable environment to work in. There’s always a friendly face when making a brew, and things like company BBQ’s and trips to the ice hockey go a long way to building morale. I’ve worked for huge multinational companies in the past and they treat you as a number only. Working for a company like Xynomix makes you feel valued and appreciated as an individual.

How would you describe Xynomix in three words?

Ambitious, welcoming  and knowledgeable

How has Xynomix helped you in your career development?

We’re very hands on here with a broad range of skills across the team. The customer base and toolsets are ever evolving and that helps everyone learn new things, whether it’s a different way of working (as there are often multiple ways to achieve the same goal) or learning new techniques / technologies. You become a more well rounded individual rather than having a sole focus, and that helps us all to grow and increase our levels of knowledge and understanding.

Which actor or actress would be best suited to play you in a movie about your life?

I’m a huge Friends fan and have been likened to Ross a number of times over the years, so I would have to say David Schwimmer. He’s a little older than me though so if I was going for someone more my age, it would have to be Zac Efron. We look very similar and have the same physique… honest!

What’s your biggest passion outside of work?

My fiancée, obviously…! We get married in a little over a year so a lot of time between now and then will be taken up with planning and all the fun stuff that comes with a wedding. I love football though; watching more than playing these days unfortunately. I won’t say who I support. We don’t want to be putting anyone off of working with us!

Do you have a motto or personal mantra?

What will be, will be. I’m a pretty chilled out character and don’t think it’s worth worrying about things that you can’t control. I find that helps me a lot to deal with situations where others might get flustered. Stay calm, think it through and be confident in your abilities.

Are there any interesting facts about yourself you'd be willing to share?

I auditioned for The Weakest Link (TV show) once and was voted out by everyone in the one practice round we did as I got all my questions wrong. It still annoys me to this day as I’m normally quite good at quizzes! I never did hear back from them.
