The challenge

  • A large UK manufacturer operating a mission-critical Oracle database, controlling production, sales and distribution for their product range
  • The client was aware that they had a badly-architected, poorly-performing system
  • It was harming their business through reduced productivity and profitability, and cost the client a great deal in support costs
  • To match predicted levels of growth, they needed an efficient resilient and scalable database system

Our solution

Our Oracle consultants and an account manager met with the manufacturer, and carried out a full assessment of the database needs of the organisation and future ambitions. We found that their database system was not consistently managed and was insufficiently patched, upgraded and tuned to function with critical applications.

A re-design of the entire database was recommended. Due to the client’s application constraints, an alternative to Oracle Real Application Cluster (RAC) was required. However, as the organisation expressed a possible interest in the future implementation of a RAC environment, it was important that the new system was based on an infrastructure that could be migrated to RAC with minimal system interruption.

The new system was based on a Linux cluster to allow for: easy future migration, the full use of shared storage and powerful commodity servers, and the highest possible availability. We recommended that they took advantage of Xynomix’s 24x7x365 proactive monitoring service.
