Oracle has just announced its intention to extend its Communications portfolio with Service Availability and Management Software.

This will be achieved with the acquisition of GoAhead Software. GoAhead is the leading developer and provider of packaged service availability software for the communications industry. GoAhead also designs and creates carrier-grade software which speeds the time to market and reduces the cost and risk of carrier-grade services that always need to be available.

The new acquisition is likely to benefit network equipment providers and it is expected to result in the creation of more comprehensive and standards-based offering that delivers service availability across the telecoms industry.

According to recent news, Oracle announced the launch of a next-generation directory, the Unified Directory 11g which integrates high storage, synchronization and proxy capabilities.

Oracle Unified Directory was developed as a key component of Oracle Fusion Middleware 11g which allows customers to better manage the vital identity information which drives their business applications.

With Oracle Unified Directory, administration and ownership costs can be considerably reduced as all corporate needs are maintained in a single directory. This also allows for a simplification of the enterprise architecture.

Some of the unique features of Oracle Unified Directory are:

- High Volume Writes – which allows customers to increase the frequency of changes to identity data and to include more content details such as location, images and relationships;

- Elastic scalability and Extreme performance – provides a global index data so that unmatched horizontal scalability is delivered;

- On-premise and Cloud computing capabilities – which controls the synchronization and virtualization of data in order to make it available to cloud-based applications and systems while data is protected;

- Next generation: builds on the success of the existing Oracle directories with innovative development to suit the needs of modern directory servers.

With organisations throughout the UK looking to prioritise the efficiency of existing database systems, Xynomix suggest 24×7 remote database monitoring as one of the keys to highly available database systems.

Many Support and Managed Services customers already have Xynomix’ monitoring technology in place. It enables users to:

Monitor database environments in real-time

Ensure maximum availability for all database environments

Act before potential problems become an issue

Analyse database usage trends

The technology can monitor database availability and performance 24x7x365. It delivers alerts and reports based on key performance indicators that have been set for the database, allowing internal DBAs and/or support DBAs within Xynomix to pre-emptively resolve potential issues.

According to Xynomix: “Our monitoring solutions are currently some of the best in class. We want to continue to deliver the most effective Oracle database monitoring solutions to market, including database cluster monitoring and incredibly accurate monitoring for Oracle and SQL server environments. We will back these up with our renowned proactive approach to system management and our industry leading Oracle support services”

Are your database systems monitored 24x7x365?

The Exadata machine, an integrated hardware and software solution for high-performance data warehousing, online transaction processing and mixed workloads, can deliver incredibly quick access to data both internally and externally

This improves the degree to which data can be analysed and used productively, and the speed at which data can be acted upon.

The buzz words here are most certainly: High Visibility and Intelligence.

In a recent newsletter, Oracle reference an IDC report which stated that Oracle’s claims of speed, efficiency and scalability are actually modest in relation to actual experience. Their data was taken from numerous customer panels and one-on-one interviews with users, citing Exadata’s easy deployment, reduced backup times and performance improvements of up to 30 times.

In yet another exciting Oracle OpenWorld announcement, attendees in San Franciso last month witnessed the debut of Oracle’s Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel for Oracle Linux.

The Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel is now available.

Optimised for Oracle software and hardware, it is described by Oracle as ‘fast, modern and reliable’ and reportedly delivers 75 percent better performance over a Red Hat Linux 5 compatible kernel.

Based on the 2.6.32 mainline Linux kernel, the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel provides the core of Oracle’s Exadata Database Machine and the new Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud. It is now the only Linux kernel that Oracle recommends for use with Oracle software.

Oracle highlight the following features of the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel for Oracle Linux:

It is fast, with the aforementioned 75 percent performance gain over Red Hat compatible kernel, a 200 percent increase in speed on infiniband messaging and 137 percent faster solid state disk access.

It is modern, with optimizations provided for large Non-Uniform Memory Access servers, improved energy efficiency, memory resource control and fine grained CPU.

It is specifically optimised for Oracle, with a capacity to run Oracle hardware, databases and middleware with excellent Linux performance and reliability.

It is reliable, with support for the Data Integrity Extensions and T10 Protection Information Model to stop corrupt data being written to storage, hardware fault management for greater application uptime and low overhead performance counters for tracing.

Oracle believe that Oracle Linux 5 and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 customers will find it easy to upgrade to the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel, without the need to reinstall the operating system.

More details can be found in Oracle’s press release, the main source for this article: http://www.oracle.com/us/corporate/press/173453

According to a recent survey of 100 companies that was conducted by the National Computing Centre, around 60% of organisations will be looking to cut costs in the future development of their IT infrastructure.

Referenced by ComputerWeekly.com, the survey revealed that hardware upgrades, software upgrades and network infrastructure upgrades will all suffer: source

Computer Weekly’s article echoes the general feeling within the IT world that now is the time for intelligent cost-saving: reducing expenditure whilst improving service delivery. Once upon a time, this may have been a tall order, but with advanced technologies and IT management processes, it is entirely possible.

Xynomix focus on the database element of IT technology stacks. We support organisations that are looking to reduce their IT spend whilst improving service levels.

We can:

Support existing DBAs to make better use of resources for reduced costs.

Or

Deliver managed services as an entire outsourced DBA team.

We currently fufill Oracle and SQL Server management requirements for a number of the UK’s largest manufacturing, construction and retail organisations.

For more information on how these services can reduce your Oracle costs in particular, please download our PDF White Paper
